Markus Söder, the Bavarian Minister-President and leader of the CSU, has called on the CDU/CSU Union to cease making speculation regarding Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz. Speaking to the “Rheinische Post” (Saturday edition), Söder remarked, “Everyone knows what is at stake and what alternatives there are. Conflict is damaging. A government that cannot act has little future in these times.”
He emphasized that there is no reason to make any changes. The CSU leader added, “The CSU and I personally will commit every effort to ensure Germany remains stable and that no one falls into panic and haste.” When asked about the ranking within the Union parliamentary group, Söder noted, “I still feel for Jens Spahn because he is a strong politician. The Union does not have so many good people that it could permanently forego him-not even in North Rhine-Westphalia.” Consequently, the Bavarian Minister-President stated that he is firmly confident “that he will eventually make a comeback.”
However, Söder mentioned that the parliamentary group is now well-positioned with Thorsten Frei and Alexander Hoffmann leading the charge. He concluded by saying to the “Rheinische Post,” “New people always bring a new chance. The common spirit is important. And this spirit means success. I am sure that everyone has this shared will.”
