As the government-appointed Pension Commission prepares to present its recommendations for pension system reform on June 23rd, the German Association of Social Welfare (SoVD) is calling for the permanent strengthening of the statutory pension. Michaela Engelmeier, the chairwoman of the SoVD, stated in interviews with the Funke Media Group newspapers that the upcoming pension reform must have a primary objective: securing the trust of citizens in old-age security by permanently fortifying the statutory pension.
According to Engelmeier, concrete solutions require a stable pension level, dependable financing, and effective measures to address old-age poverty. The SoVD head emphasized that people must be able to rely on the promise that decades of work will result in a sufficient pension. She rejected reform approaches that rely exclusively on individuals working longer, arguing instead for fundamental structural improvements.
