Spanish Minister Blames ‘Unexplained Control Error’ in Deadly High-Speed Train Crash

Following the severe train accident near Toledo, which claimed numerous lives, Spanish Transport Minister Oscar Puente pointed to what he called an “unexplained” and “wrong” decision made by the rail control center as the cause.

Puente stated on Wednesday afternoon that a computer malfunction caused six moving trains to come to a halt, including the two that ultimately collided. He explained that while the control center typically assumes command during a system failure, it allegedly decided, under “unexplained circumstances,” to allow the trains to proceed again without speed restrictions.

The fatal incident occurred Wednesday morning just before 9 a.m. on the route between Madrid and Seville. An AVE train operated by Renfe crashed into a stationary Iryo train. Latest reports confirm that at least 64 people died, and more than 179 individuals were injured. Rescue operations continued throughout the afternoon.
