Steffen Krach, the top candidate for Berlin’s SPD, has pledged to introduce a rapid rent register for the capital should the Social Democrats win the election. He told the broadcasters RTL and ntv that the system would be designed to reveal where excessively high rents are being charged and where housing units are sitting empty. “By July 2027, such a rent register must be in place,” he stated, affirming his commitment to the citizens of Berlin, stressing he would not settle for implementation taking three, four, or five years. The Berlin rent register is intended to consolidate data on the rental stock, helping authorities uncover rents that are too high and violations of tenancy laws. However, according to the Senate Department for Urban Development, establishing the full system is expected to take several years before it reaches regular operational status. Krach described the project as a “real game-changer” for the housing market, claiming that once it is operational, charging exorbitant rents would no longer be possible.
