SPD Minister Warns: AfD Interior Minister Poses “Flagrant Security Risk” to Federal Republic

Interior Minister for Thuringia, Georg Maier (SPD), stated that a different approach to handling intelligence information would be necessary should the Alternative for Germany (AfD) take power in Saxony-Anhalt. Speaking to Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland, Maier warned that if an AfD minister were appointed to the position, it would, in his view, constitute a blatant security risk for the Federal Republic. The SPD politician cautioned that an AfD interior minister would have access to highly confidential information, specifically in areas such as counter-espionage and combating right-wing extremism. Consequently, he suggested that possibilities should be explored to withhold certain information pertaining to these sensitive fields from the State Office for the Protection of the Constitution in Saxony-Anhalt within the framework of the federal counter-intelligence network.
