Sebastian Roloff, the economic policy spokesperson for the SPD parliamentary group, has called on the European Union to enact a strong counter-measure against the new tariffs announced by U.S. President Donald Trump. Speaking to the “Handelsblatt”, Roloff stressed that “counter-measures are needed to make it clear to the USA that they are equally dependent on smooth global trade”. He suggested that implementing a digital tax on major US tech companies, such as Meta, Google, and Amazon, would be a suitable action.
Roloff warned that the recent announcements by the U.S. government-which plan to raise tariffs on European cars and trucks to 25 percent starting next week-would critically impact Germany’s key industries at a sensitive time. The SPD politician stated that “the German government cannot afford to accept this” adding that history shows they must not give in to Trump’s demands.
