The gunman from Stade has taken his own life in his cell at the Bremervörde correctional facility. According to reports from “Spiegel”, the inmate reportedly hanged himself using an article of his outer clothing. Judicial circles are currently investigating whether the room was monitored by cameras.
Following the incident in Stade, the man, who was apprehended near the scene, had reportedly told the magazine that he intended to shoot himself with his weapon but was out of ammunition.
Carina Hermann, the CDU Parliamentary Secretary for the Lower Saxony state parliament, is calling for a thorough investigation into the circumstances of the death. She stated, “He should have been observed around the clock as a prisoner at acute suicide risk.” The Ministry of Justice in Hanover confirmed that the reasons why this apparently did not happen are now under scrutiny.
Thomas Pfleiderer, Lower Saxony’s State Commissioner for Victim Protection, expressed his feelings of being “shocked, distressed, and affected.” He remarked to “Spiegel” that the families of the Stade victims are likely feeling similarly. Since the crime occurred only three weeks ago, the death of the suspect could lead to further trauma for the relatives. Pfleiderer added that losing a loved one through a serious crime, or becoming a victim of one’s own, is “the worst thing in a person’s life.”
