Daniel Günther, the Prime Minister of Schleswig-Holstein, has not ruled out running for the position of federal Chancellor in the future. When asked by Focus whether he would prefer the Chancellery in Berlin or a state ministerial position, Günther told the publication that he would “absolutely not want to be a minister, but rather prefer to remain Prime Minister.”
He responded evasively when asked if he feels capable of leading the Chancellery. However, he affirmed that his ambition is certainly sufficient for him to continue serving as the Prime Minister for another period. The CDU politician is slated to stand as the leading candidate again in next year’s state elections.
Currently, Günther sees his primary role as setting a positive example of how governments can work together and communicate effectively. Since 2022, he has led a black-green coalition. He describes the smooth cooperation between the two parties as the “Schleswig-Holstein style,” and believes that Berlin has much to learn from this approach.
