SPD foreign policy expert Ralf Stegner called on the European Union to adopt a unified refugee policy. Speaking to the “Rheinische Post” (Saturday edition), he stated that the challenging situation in Ceuta highlights the necessity of a joint humanitarian approach in Europe to successfully manage refugee issues. Stegner warned that when smugglers and populists profit from the situation, it inevitably comes at the expense of humanitarian principles. In the wake of the migrant influx into the Spanish exclave, some EU member states are already advocating for Spain’s exclusion from the Schengen Area.
