Strack-Zimmermann Defends FDP Candidate Bid Amid Internal Conflict and Call for Center Positioning

Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann, a Member of the European Parliament for the FDP, justified her decision to withdraw her last-minute candidacy during the FDP party conference by citing the complex internal party dynamics and the motivation to ensure a truly representative selection process. Speaking to the “Bild-Zeitung” Strack-Zimmermann stated that the party has a right to choose, particularly during these times. She regretted the late withdrawal of Hönes, noting that this move had significantly narrowed the options for other potential candidates. Furthermore, she indicated that her decision was also a measured response to party members who had threatened to defect should Kubicki, the candidate, win the leadership.

Strack-Zimmermann also offered criticism regarding the conduct of some members. Referring to Martin Hagen, the recently elected FDP Secretary-General, she expressed disapproval of statements and behaviors he had repeatedly exhibited, specifically referencing his recent highly provocative comment regarding the “wall” to the AfD, which she found objectionable. Content-wise, she emphasized the absolute necessity for the FDP to maintain a clear position in the political center, stressing that the party does not belong either with the CDU or the AfD.

Concerning her relationship with Wolfgang Kubicki, who was elected as the new party chief with approximately 60 percent of the votes, she said she works with him “in principle”. However, she clarified that they are “not close friends” which explained her understated congratulations for his electoral success.
