The state of Saxony-Anhalt has signed letters of intent with two potential investors for the former Intel site in Magdeburg. According to Michael Richter, the regional Minister of Economy and Finance, these negotiations are currently underway. One of the prospective investors is FMC, a memory chip startup based in Dresden. The second company is not a semiconductor manufacturer. However, Richter noted that the financial terms for FMC remain open, with financing being one of the key requirements the investors must meet.
The state also needs to guarantee the necessary power and water supply for the premises. This includes the installation of a 380-kV power line and the development of a waterworks on the Elbe, which is currently being planned. Richter confirmed that the power and water supply for the site will be secured by the state starting in 2028, and he anticipates that the chosen company could commence operations within two to three years.
This development follows the cancellation of Intel’s plans for a factory on the Magdeburger Börde in July 2025. The US chip maker had originally planned to invest €30 billion, with one-third of that capital coming from the government.
Turning to the Domo plant in Leuna, Richter reported that there is currently no concrete acquisition offer on the table. The chemical company had filed for insolvency at the end of 2025, and the holding company, Leuna-Polyamid, became unable to pay its debts in June. The facility in Leuna is currently used to produce polyamides and fertilizers, such as ammonium sulfate. The Minister stressed the urgency of the situation, stating that the state requires a decision by mid-September, otherwise, the plant will be forced to shut down.
