Swedish Forces Intercept Russian Jets Over Baltic Sea, Reinforcing NATO Deterrence

The Swedish armed forces reported on Saturday that on Friday, they intercepted two Russian fighter jets as they approached Swedish airspace over both the southern and northern parts of the Baltic Sea. The army stated that the aircraft did not suffer any damage. When the Russian jets-identified as Su-24 Fencers and Su-34 Fullbacks-were detected, a rapid response was initiated. Two squadrons of Saab JAS 39 Gripen jets were scrambled to defend their territory, challenge the Russian fighters, and identify them. A Danish fighter jet was also involved in the reaction above the southern Baltic Sea. Sweden joined the NATO defense alliance in 2024 in light of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine. Under Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty, an armed attack against one NATO member is considered an attack against all. The treaty states that member states must assist each other if an armed attack occurs, taking all necessary measures to restore and maintain security in the North Atlantic region.
