The U.S. stock markets experienced mixed developments on Monday. As trading concluded in New York, the Dow closed at 51,839 points, marking a decrease of 0.6 percent compared to the previous day. Earlier in the day, the broader S&P 500 stood around 7,445 points, down 0.2 percent, while the technology-focused Nasdaq 100 finished close to 28,605 points, slightly in positive territory.
Investors began to turn back towards technology stocks following the recent sell-off in the semiconductor sector. However, Wall Street is expected to maintain a close watch this week on the quarterly earnings reports of tech giants, including Alphabet, Tesla, Intel, and IBM.
In currency markets, the European common currency weakened slightly by Monday evening; the Euro traded at 1.1416 US dollars, corresponding to the dollar costing 0.8760 Euros.
Gold prices showed a decline, with fine ounces fetching $4,009 by the evening, a drop of 0.2 percent. This equated to a price of 112.89 Euros per gram. Conversely, the oil price saw a significant rise. A barrel of Brent crude oil cost $88.99 as of 10 PM Central European Time on Monday, which was an increase of 1.0 percent or 89 cents from the previous trading day’s close.
