Telekom has successfully secured the media rights for the 2030 Football World Cup. The company announced this on Sunday, ahead of the 2026 World Cup final between Spain and Argentina, which means some matches of the tournament will once again only be viewable on MagentaTV.
The commemorative tournament, which celebrates 100 years since the first World Cup, is scheduled to take place from June 8 to July 21, 2030. It will be held on three continents across six different countries. The host nations include Spain, Portugal, and Morocco, with individual matches also taking place in Uruguay, Paraguay, and Argentina. The final number of participating teams has not yet been determined, although it could be either 48 or 64 teams.
Under the German Broadcasting Treaty (Rundfunkstaatsvertrag), all matches involving the German national team, the opening match, the semi-finals, and the final must be broadcast on free-to-air television. These specific contests are classified as events of considerable public societal importance.
