In the ongoing debate regarding a nationwide rent cap, the German Tenants’ Association (DMB) has expressed support for the Left Party’s demands for heightened housing market regulation. Melanie Weber-Moritz, the DMB President, explicitly welcomed the latest proposals from the Left parliamentary group during interviews with the “Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland.” She specifically referred to a concept previously put forth by the Left Party, which outlines a significantly stronger two-tiered regulation of rents.
Weber-Moritz explained that these suggestions address core issues that the DMB has campaigned for over many years. The Association itself advocates for a rent freeze, aimed at temporarily halting rent increases and subsequently establishing permanently stricter limits on how rental prices can develop. She emphasized that rapid and decisive action is necessary given the exponential rise in rents seen across many areas.
The DMB President further stressed that “housing is a fundamental right and not an object of speculation.” Therefore, in addition to effective rent price regulation, there must also be substantial increases in public investment dedicated to creating social and permanently affordable housing. Finally, Weber-Moritz demanded that the Federal Government finally implement effective tenant protection measures.
