Todd Blanche, the former personal lawyer for President Donald Trump, has been confirmed as the United States Secretary of Justice. The confirmation occurred on Saturday following a narrow Senate vote of 50 to 49, with Republicans Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski casting dissenting votes.
Senator Bill Cassidy played a significant role in the process by publicly announcing his support for Blanche, stating that he represented the best available choice for the President. Despite previous political friction between Trump and Cassidy, Cassidy opted to endorse Blanche.
Blanche has been serving as an acting Secretary of Justice since April, stepping into the role after the departure of Pam Bondi. During the confirmation hearings, several Republican senators voiced reservations regarding Blanche’s management of documents related to Jeffrey Epstein and his involvement in establishing an $1.8 billion “Anti-Weaponization” fund. Following criticism from these Republican senators, Blanche committed to withdrawing the fund. Nevertheless, it remains unclear whether this commitment is legally enforceable or if Trump might later persuade Blanche to relaunch a similar initiative under a different framework.
