The Federal Transport Ministry has confirmed that there was no sabotage related to the recent rail disruptions. According to a ministry spokesperson, the railways have ruled this out based on current knowledge. The railway operator communicated that the disruption to the digital rail radio system was caused by the planned replacement of a technical component.
The operator must now conduct a detailed analysis to determine exactly how the failure occurred, with particular focus on operational procedures, redundancy, and overall resilience. Despite the incident, all operational emergency processes were successfully activated, and the cause analysis has been initiated immediately. Furthermore, a backup system took over the necessary tasks, allowing rail operations to be gradually resumed.
Speaking about infrastructure resilience, the spokesperson stressed that this is precisely the topic the Minister has put on the political agenda. The digital transformation of railways must continue. The current GSM-R system will ultimately be replaced by the new 5G-based FRMCS communication standard, which will be introduced on both the infrastructure and rolling stock. Funding for these projects is managed through the performance and financing agreement with Deutsche Bahn. In total, the federal government has made available approximately ten billion euros for the digitization of the railway until 2029. The goal is to implement the “Future Railway Mobile Communication System” as part of the “European Rail Traffic Management Systems,” thereby replacing the existing 2G GSM-R train radio.
When asked whether the Minister intends to intervene more strongly in the management of the railway company in the future, the spokesperson responded that the Minister maintains an extremely close and continuous exchange with Ms. Palla and monitors current developments very carefully.
