Trump Announces New Iran Talks Amid Heightened Tensions Over Strait of Hormuz

Donald Trump announced plans for new negotiations with Iran, stating on his “Truth Social” platform on Sunday that a US delegation would be in Islamabad, Pakistan, Monday evening to conduct discussions.

He accused Iran of breaking the ceasefire in the Strait of Hormuz by targeting ships. Trump added that the US would offer a “very fair and reasonable deal” stating, “I hope they accept it, because if they don’t, the United States will destroy every single power plant and every single bridge in Iran”.

This announcement comes amid previous confusion regarding the suspension of the Strait of Hormuz. Although Iran had intended to lift its blockade, the decision was reversed after the United States did not lift its own sea blockade against ships heading to Iranian ports. The Strait of Hormuz is a strategically vital waterway through which a substantial portion of global oil transport passes. Control over this passage has far-reaching geopolitical consequences and has already caused fluctuations in oil prices in recent weeks.
