Former President Donald Trump has directed the Justice Department to investigate Democratic leaders, following his party, the Republicans, losing the election. Trump criticized the Democratic party on his personal platform, accusing them of engaging in “blackmail of the highest order.” He alleged that Democrats were threatening numerous individuals, including the United States Attorney General, with impeachment proceedings and various criminal measures, even though those targets had committed no crimes or even considered doing so.
The former president stated that these so-called blackmailers should be put in jail, adding that he was issuing an order to the Justice Department to immediately investigate this alleged criminal activity. While he did not specify a particular law that had been violated, Trump claimed that Democrats were also threatening Republican donors with “prison time and many other forms of punishment.” Furthermore, he asserted that threat letters had been sent to many innocent individuals by prominent Democratic politicians.
The piece also referenced the two separate attempts to impeach Trump during his first term. In the first instance, Trump was accused of withholding military aid to Ukraine as a means to pressure the Ukrainian government into initiating investigations against his political rivals, Joe Biden and his son Hunter. The second attempt charged him with massively inciting a crowd at a rally before the January 6, 2021, Capitol attack through unsubstantiated claims of election fraud. Both impeachment proceedings ultimately failed in the Senate, lacking the necessary two-thirds majority. In each attempt, the support for his removal was minimal: only one Republican Senator voted for the first impeachment, and seven Republicans voted for the second. Looking ahead, Trump noted that any future attempts at impeachment would depend heavily on the votes of his own party, noting that Republicans currently hold at least 44 out of the 100 Senate seats following the midterm elections.
