Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) held a telephone conversation with U.S. President Donald Trump during the night, so government spokesperson Stefan Kornelius confirmed on Friday in response to the dts news agency. The primary subject of the discussion appears to have been the war in Ukraine. Kornelius added that the Chancellor involved the U.S. President in his considerations. Recent discussions held by the U.S. government with Russian representatives have taken place against the backdrop of extended preparations for negotiation formats, both in Abu Dhabi and at potential future locations. The German government, alongside the E3 group and other European partners, is involved in these arrangements. Furthermore, Kornelius stated that there is agreement with Washington on the necessity of ending the war in Ukraine first before moving on to discussing a “European security order.” He emphasized that achieving a “consensus among NATO partners” is also essential. Conversations regarding the end of the war and the future of Europe must include European participation, otherwise, they will not be productive. The call took place due to a callback from Trump; the U.S. President responded to a call attempt by the Chancellor that had been unsuccessful, according to the government spokesperson. Nevertheless, the two sides maintain a “continuous dialogue.”
