Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) will not attend the climate conference (COP31) beginning on Monday in Turkey. Following sharp criticism regarding the initial announcement, the decision in Berlin has now been more thoroughly justified. According to reports from government circles cited by the FAZ, the reasons for his absence include the fact that significant clarifications are still required within the governing coalition ahead of the Budget Committee’s meeting on Wednesday. Furthermore, the European Council and the European Political Community are convening in Dublin on Thursday, an engagement that will continue until Friday. Key discussions at this summit involve the multi-year financial framework of the European Union and the succession planning for the ECB presidency. It had previously been announced that Environmental Minister Carsten Schneider and Development Minister Reem Alabali Radovan (both SPD) would be traveling to the climate conference.
