Trump Eyes Cut to ROK Military Drills Amid Kim Jong-un Ties and Seoul Criticism

US President Donald Trump declared via his platform “Truth Social” that he plans to reduce the joint military exercises held with South Korea. He stated that the drills are not only costly but also send “a completely inappropriate and hostile signal” to a nation he felt had been “not threatening and respectful” toward him during his presidency.

Trump explained that his dissatisfaction with the long-standing US participation in these joint exercises stems from his positive relationship with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. He subsequently instructed Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to significantly scale back the exercises, noting that a complete cancellation was no longer feasible.

In addition to the military announcement, Trump sharply criticized South Korea. He mentioned that he recently asked the South Korean president whether the nation was prepared to join the “denuclearization” of Iran, a request that was declined. He clarified, however, that this interaction had nothing to do with his current decision regarding the military drills.

The previously planned eleven-day exercises were meant to bolster readiness against threats coming from North Korea, involving 18,000 South Korean soldiers. Meanwhile, North Korea had previously threatened undefined, severe measures against both the U.S. and South Korea, labeling the exercises as a “general rehearsal for an aggressive war,” which would only increase regional instability.
