U.S. President Donald Trump signed a decree on Thursday instructing federal agencies to rename Lake Ontario, which forms part of the border between the United States and Canada, to “Lake America” on all U.S. maps, documents, and databases. This move is reportedly linked to the ongoing trade disputes between the two nations and Trump’s repeated threats to annex Canada as a 51st state. Legally, however, no entity outside the United States is required to adopt the name change. Speaking about the renaming, Trump referenced his earlier renaming of the Gulf of Mexico, stating, “We have a Gulf and we have a lake,” before musing, “Now we just need an ocean.” The President added that he might need to change the names of either the Atlantic or Pacific Oceans, suggesting: “Maybe we change both names.”
