Trump Threatens Troop Withdrawal from Germany Amid Criticism of German Leadership

Former U.S. President Donald Trump has threatened to reduce American troop presence in Germany. On his platform, Truth Social, Trump wrote late Thursday that the United States is currently examining the possibility of diminishing its military forces stationed in Germany, adding that a decision would be made soon. The post was noted for its unusual brevity, offering no further explanatory details.

This latest threat appears to be part of a pattern of heightened rhetoric, following comments from Tuesday when Trump sharply attacked German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. Trump claimed that Merz was content with Iran possessing nuclear weapons, dismissing Merz’s knowledge and stating, “If Iran had a nuclear weapon, the entire world would be at its mercy. I am doing something regarding Iran right now that other nations or presidents should have done long ago”.

Trump continued his criticisms, asserting that it is “no wonder that Germany is having such a hard time, both economically and in other ways”. This rhetoric followed Merz criticizing the U.S. military and negotiation strategies on Monday.

Historically, the U.S. has maintained numerous military bases across Germany since the Second World War, with significant sites located in states such as Rhineland-Palatinate, Hesse, Baden-Württemberg, Bavaria, and NRW. A key example is the Ramstein Air Base in Rhineland-Palatinate, which is one of the largest U.S. Air Force facilities outside the United States. The associated “Kaiserslautern Military Community” for instance, is home to approximately 50,000 Americans.
