The UK government is holding tech giants Apple and Google accountable for developing improved child safety software. At the London Tech Week on Monday, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced that he has given both companies a deadline of September to block explicit images on children’s mobile phones. If they fail to comply, they face a mandatory legal requirement. The companies would need to enable nudity detection algorithms or similar technical solutions on smartphones and tablets. These tools are intended to prevent minors from capturing or sharing images of genitals unless they are verified as adults. Starmer stated that Britain aims to become the first country in the world where it is impossible for children to record, share, or view nude pictures. He strongly rejected the idea that this is an unavoidable cost of modern technology, insisting, “I completely reject that because technology should adapt to the needs of society, not the other way around.”
