British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced a comprehensive ban on social media platforms for all children and young people under the age of 16. Speaking from Downing Street on Monday morning, he described the move as a “great moment” for the country and a “real change.” The government intends to implement these initiatives under a framework referred to as “Australia plus.”
Starmer justified the policy by citing the negative effects these platforms have on the mental health of young people. He argued that social media was leading to unhappiness among children, facilitating bullying, and was deliberately designed to be addictive. While stating he was not taking the decision lightly, the Premier maintained that the government needed to make clear choices.
This announcement comes just a few days ahead of the Makerfield by-election, in which Labour politician and Starmer rival Andy Burnham is expected to enter Parliament. Observers view this as an attempt by Starmer to shape public opinion before a potential political realignment.
