Vice Ukrainian Prime Minister Taras Katschka welcomed the proposal made by Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) to grant Ukraine a special status as an “associated member” of the European Union.
Speaking to the “Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung” (Friday edition), Katschka stressed that anything that speeds up the country’s accession process would be beneficial. He emphasized that neither the EU nor Ukraine should lose time, although he cautioned that such proposals must not distract from the ultimate goal of full membership.
Furthermore, Katschka demanded the prompt opening of all negotiation clusters, noting that Ukraine is making solid progress in its reform efforts. He stated, “Ukraine is ready for membership based on performance”.
While acknowledging the desire for quick progress, the Vice Prime Minister highlighted that Europe has existed in a new reality since the Russian aggression. Katschka expressed confidence that Ukraine will meet all required EU criteria and sign the accession treaty by the end of 2027.
