Union Opts for Measured Approach: Succession Search After Spahn Exit Faces No Rush

Following the departure of CDU faction leader Jens Spahn, his deputy, Alexander Hoffmann of the CSU, stated on Saturday to ZDF that there is no immediate rush in finding a successor. Hoffmann emphasized that there is “fundamentally no hurry.”

He added that the leaderships of the CDU and CSU will coordinate their steps regarding the future course of action and take the necessary time. For the moment, Hoffmann has taken charge provisionally and will continue to lead the faction until a new chairman is elected.

Hoffmann also noted that the Union entered the summer recess with a comprehensive reform package. This includes the 34 measures agreed upon in the coalition committee, along with the reform of the statutory health insurance system. Furthermore, other planned initiatives, such as the care reform, are already scheduled. Despite the leadership change, Hoffmann affirmed that the faction remains “capable of decision-making, capable of action, and capable of speaking out.”
