The ongoing trade dispute between the United States and Canada escalated further over the weekend. Following the failure of recent negotiations, the US announced imposing 50% tariffs on Canadian goods valued at $20 billion. In response, Canada is planning to implement equivalent measures starting September 8th.
US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer stated that the goal of the tariffs is to protect domestic jobs and supply chains. He claimed that Canada consistently presented “the best offer,” but the Canadians were unwilling to accept it.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced that details regarding new customs measures will be released in the coming days, with the tariffs set to enter into force on Tuesday following Labor Day. Carney asserted, “They demanded too much and offered too little.” He added that the two nations are now engaged in a “trade war,” emphasizing, “You are in war when you are attacked. We have been attacked.”
Carney confirmed that the US tariffs will be mirrored on a “dollar for dollar” basis starting September 8th, affecting duties on products such as steel, dairy products, household appliances, and electronics. Prior to the breakdown of talks, Canada had proposed lifting remaining retaliatory tariffs on steel, aluminum, and automobiles if the US were to significantly lower its own duties.
