According to sources within NATO, the United States intends to significantly reduce several of its military capabilities within NATO defense planning. A list circulated to NATO allies indicates notable cuts across various areas, including tank aircraft, combat jets, drone fleets, bomber forces, and naval units. Specific reductions include the complete removal of modern KC-46 refueling aircraft from NATO planning, a decrease in the number of F-16 and F-15E combat jets, and the complete withdrawal of long-range surveillance drones. These cuts could potentially create substantial capability gaps for European NATO states, particularly in air refueling, reconnaissance, and drone deployment. NATO has pointed out that Europe and Canada are now investing much more heavily in their own defense and are capable of taking on greater responsibility. The alliance partners plan to discuss the exact details of these reductions over the coming weeks, with a unified approach scheduled to be presented at the NATO summit in Ankara at the beginning of July.
