U.S. stock markets showed a mixed performance on Tuesday. New York trading closed with the Dow finishing at 51,787 points, marking a 0.4 percent decline compared to the previous trading day. A little earlier, the broader S&P 500 had been gaining by 0.4 percent, reaching approximately 7,569 points, while the technology exchange, the Nasdaq 100, was trading around 28,180 points, also up by 0.7 percent at that time.
Concerns surrounding artificial intelligence continue to fuel nervousness in the markets. As the results of the U.S. midterm elections are anticipated tomorrow night, the construction of data centers has become a subject of the campaign. Rising energy costs associated with these facilities, coupled with their high water consumption and environmental impact, are causing concern among many segments of the population. Should the expected “Blue Wave” in the election forecasts grant Democrats a majority in both chambers of Congress, it could lead to stricter regulations concerning language models and data centers.
In other global markets, the European community currency strengthened slightly on Tuesday evening, with one Euro exchanging for 1.1191 U.S. dollars, and the dollar fetching 0.8936 Euros. The price of gold moved lower, falling 0.6 percent to reach $3,924 per fine troy ounce in the evening. This translates to a price of 112.74 Euros per gram. Oil prices also dipped; the Brent North Sea crude barrel cost $104.40 late Monday evening, which was 0.4 percent less than the closing price of the previous trading day.
