US stock markets saw gains on Monday. In New York, the Dow closed at 53,055 points, marking a 0.3 percent increase compared to the preceding trading day. Just moments before the close, the broader S&P 500 registered a positive 0.7 percent, while tech-heavy Nasdaq 100 climbed 1.3 percent to reach approximately 29,695 points.
The Dow successfully surpassed the 53,000 mark, setting a new record following a long weekend. This record-breaking surge was primarily fueled by technology stocks, as AI-related valuations recovered after recent selling. However, the stock of Microsoft remained an outlier; an announcement regarding the cutting of thousands of jobs was apparently met with resistance from market participants.
On the currency front, the Euro strengthened slightly on Monday evening. The exchange rate stood at 1.1440 US dollars per Euro, meaning the dollar was worth 0.8741 Euros.
Meanwhile, the gold price softened, trading at $4,162 per troy ounce in the evening, a 0.3 percent decline. This translated to a price of 116.96 Euros per gram.
Oil prices saw a minor increase. A barrel of Brent crude from the North Sea cost $72.13 at 10 PM Central European Time on Monday, which was exactly one cent or 0.0 percent more than the close of the previous trading day.
