US Minister Still Sees Possible Near-Term Iran Peace Deal, Backing Hormuz Strait Opening

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio maintained the possibility of a soon-to-be-concluded deal ending the war with Iran, stating in New Delhi that it could potentially happen by the end of Monday. He added that while they had hoped for news yesterday evening or today, he would refrain from over-interpreting the situation. According to Rubio, a “solid offer” is currently on the table that would allow for the opening of the Strait of Hormuz, an initiative that has garnered significant backing in the Gulf region. However, Rubio also emphasized that Israel retains the right to defend itself against attacks.

This follows previous statements by U.S. President Donald Trump, who announced on Saturday that a new peace agreement with Iran was reportedly close to finalization. However, the President cooled expectations the next day, saying the deal was not yet fully negotiated, and asserting that he would not agree to a bad arrangement.
