Union chairman Frank Werneke has warned the federal government that the union will launch protests if employment protection laws are weakened. Speaking to RTL and ntv, Werneke stressed that job security is a high priority in Germany. Given the rising threats within the job market, he described any reduction of these protections as a harsh cutback and an assault on workers’ rights. “We will certainly not accept that without protest,” Werneke stated. Beyond job security, Werneke firmly rejects other proposed reforms, such as the elimination of the eight-hour workday or any deterioration of continued pay during illness. He insisted that these changes offer no benefits and assert that they will not advance the German economy or the country as a whole.
