Wadephul Calls for Stronger NATO Air Defense Spending Amid Russian Drone Threats

Federal Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul (CDU) called upon NATO member states to invest more heavily in aerial defense. This call followed an incident where a drone, reportedly originating from Russia according to NATO, crashed into a residential building in the Romanian city of Galati on Friday night. Speaking to ARD on Sunday, Wadephul suggested that “this drone could perhaps have been fought more effectively” emphasizing that NATO must make it clear that there are no compromises when it comes to defending its territory.

Separately, the CDU politician is currently lobbying in New York for Germany to gain a position on the UN Security Council. According to Wadephul, Germany could be viewed by many as a useful mediator. “We are seen as someone who does not immediately represent economic interests when dealing with other conflicts” he stated. He argued that Germany must assume a stronger international role because “the global community is in a difficult situation”. The fact that nearly all African states would support Germany’s candidacy illustrates the trust the country enjoys in the region.

The election for non-permanent members of the UN Security Council will take place in New York on Wednesday. Besides Germany, Austria and Portugal are also running for the two vacant seats.
