The Social Democratic Party (SPD) parliamentary group is escalating pressure on the Union party, issuing a warning about potential conflicts over water distribution. Deputy Group Spokesperson Esra Limbacher told the “Rheinische Post” that water supply must now be placed under greater focus. She pointed out that “usage conflicts already exist in some regions today.”
Therefore, she argued that unusual solutions must be examined. The SPD politician added that while seawater desalination along the coasts and transporting water to particularly dry areas “may seem unusual today,” they should still be considered given the trends expected in the coming decades. It is also crucial to implement better water storage methods and actively promote the replenishment of groundwater.
Limbacher noted that as rivers carry less water in the summer, the question of how much water is available for agriculture, industry, drinking water supply, and nature will become increasingly pressing. She concluded that “the distribution of water between perpetually water-rich and increasingly dry regions will be a central task.”
