In the opening match of Group G at the Football World Cup, Belgium and Egypt ended in a 1-1 draw.
The competitive game began with Egypt taking the lead in the 20th minute, thanks to Emam Ashour. The midfielder finished a skillful pass from Mohamed Salah, unleashing a powerful right-footed shot from 20 meters that found the bottom left corner. Belgium’s goalkeeper, Thibaut Courtois, had no chance of preventing the goal.
Belgium struggled to find their footing after conceding, but leveled the score in the 66th minute via an own goal by Mohamed Hany. Just moments before, Romelu Lukaku had been substituted onto the pitch and put pressure on the Egyptian defender, causing him to awkwardly divert the ball into his own net. Thomas Meunier provided the cross from the right that ultimately led to the equalizer.
In the final phase of the match, Belgium pressed hard for a winner. However, Egyptian goalkeeper Mohamed Shoubeir secured a valuable point for his team by making several impressive saves. He was particularly outstanding in the 83rd minute, tipping a header from Brandon Mechele off the post with his fingertips. Yet, Egypt also managed to create opportunities in the closing stages.
While both teams displayed promising football at times, neither possessed the necessary striking power to secure a decisive goal. Belgium will need to improve in upcoming fixtures to meet expectations, while Egypt can be content with the point earned.
