The leader of the Christian Social Union (CSU), Markus Söder, has defended the German government’s measured response to the escalating situation in Gaza. In a recent ZDF interview, Söder affirmed his support for the current approach taken by Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock, emphasizing the importance of their visible presence and statements regarding the unfolding events.
While acknowledging a slight improvement in the circumstances, Söder stated that further action is necessary. He reiterated the importance of adhering to established principles concerning Israel, describing the nation as “the” democracy in the Middle East and Germany’s closest partner. Highlighting the recent attacks against Israel and the ongoing captivity of Israeli hostages held by Hamas, Söder declared Germany’s continued solidarity with Israel. He concurrently stressed the need for increased humanitarian efforts.
