German Exports Rise, Imports Surge in June

German trade data released Thursday by the Statistical Federal Office (Destatis) indicates shifts in export and import patterns during June 2025, compared to both the previous month and the same period last year.

On a seasonally and calendar adjusted basis, German exports rose by 0.8 percent in June compared to May, while imports increased more significantly, by 4.2 percent. When compared to June 2024, exports were up 2.4 percent and imports climbed 7.9 percent.

Total exports for June amounted to €130.5 billion, while imports totaled €115.6 billion, resulting in a trade surplus of €14.9 billion. This represents a decrease from the €18.5 billion surplus observed in May and the €20.3 billion surplus recorded in June 2024.

Within the European Union, German exports reached €73.0 billion and imports from EU nations totaled €59.6 billion. Exports to EU member states rose by 2.4 percent, while imports from these countries increased by 3.5 percent compared to May.

Trade with the Eurozone saw exports of €50.7 billion (a 3.1 percent increase) and imports of €39.3 billion (a 3.9 percent increase). Exports to EU nations outside the Eurozone reached €22.3 billion (1.0 percent increase), accompanied by imports of €20.4 billion (2.8 percent increase).

Exports to third-party countries totaled €57.5 billion, with imports from these nations at €56.0 billion. Exports to third-party countries experienced a slight decrease of 1.2 percent, while imports grew by 5.0 percent, when compared to May.

The United States remained the primary destination for German exports, however, exports to the U.S. fell by 2.1 percent on a seasonally and calendar adjusted basis, reaching €11.8 billion. This marks the third consecutive decline and the lowest figure since February 2022. Exports to the U.S. were down 8.4 percent compared to June 2024. In contrast, exports to the People’s Republic of China rose slightly, increasing 1.1 percent to €6.9 billion. Exports to the United Kingdom also saw a small gain, rising 0.4 percent to €7.2 billion.

China was the largest source of German imports in June, with imports totaling €14.6 billion, a 5.8 percent increase from the previous month. Imports from the United States also saw a substantial rise, jumping 19.8 percent to €8.8 billion, matching the highest level since June 2022. Meanwhile, imports from the United Kingdom decreased by 5.5 percent to €3.0 billion.

Notably, exports to Russia increased by 10.3 percent compared to May, reaching €0.6 billion. This represents a 3.6 percent increase compared to June 2024. Imports from Russia also saw a sharp increase, rising by 46.0 percent to €0.1 billion; however, they remain 17.7 percent lower than the figures recorded in June 2024.
