Coalition Calls for Unity After German Election Shift

Rheinland-Pfalz’s Minister President Alexander Schweitzer, also a Vice-Chair of the Social Democratic Party (SPD), has urged improved cooperation within the governing coalition following the withdrawal of Frauke Brosius-Gersdorf as a candidate for the Federal Constitutional Court.

In remarks to the “Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland”, Schweitzer stated, “This federal government is destined to succeed” adding, “I can only hope that everyone recognizes this, especially Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz.

He emphasized the urgency of identifying a new nominee for the Constitutional Court, stressing the need for the coalition to rapidly reach a consensus and subsequently secure a parliamentary majority in support of the candidate.

Schweitzer expressed bewilderment regarding the conflict surrounding the judicial appointment, highlighting the coalition’s strong initial progress on key initiatives, including the special fund for infrastructure. “It’s incomprehensible to me that the process would stall so dramatically over a judicial appointment” he stated.

He accused the parliamentary group of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and Christian Social Union (CSU) of failing to uphold a prior commitment. Schweitzer suggested that Brosius-Gersdorf’s withdrawal, after a campaign that he believes unfairly targeted her professional integrity, “resolved a problem she did not create herself”.
