Berlin police have launched an investigation following an assault on a 49-year-old man at Alexanderplatz in the Mitte district on Friday evening. The assailant, identified as a 20-year-old, allegedly struck and kicked the man after an initial verbal exchange, which reportedly included racially motivated insults. The victim was walking with his eleven-year-old son at the time of the incident.
Authorities have confirmed the 20-year-old, along with two companions aged 17 and 18, are all trainee officers with the Berlin Police. The victim sustained injuries to his head and hand and required hospital treatment. The principal suspect registered a blood alcohol content of approximately 1.9 per mille and his companions were also found to have been drinking.
The State Security division of the Criminal Investigation Department has taken over the investigation. Alongside potential criminal charges, internal disciplinary measures are also being considered. Interestingly, the 20-year-old suspect also filed a complaint alleging he had been threatened by the victim during the altercation. The case is currently under active investigation.
