Europe Urges Pressure on Russia Ahead of Trump-Putin Meeting

Leading European nations have signaled a unified stance ahead of a planned meeting between the U.S. President and the Russian President, emphasizing the continued need for a multi-faceted approach to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

In a joint statement released late Saturday, the leaders of Germany, France, Italy, Poland, the United Kingdom, Finland and the European Union articulated their belief that a successful resolution requires the combination of active diplomacy, sustained support for Ukraine and continued pressure on the Russian Federation to cease its military actions. They affirmed their readiness to contribute diplomatically to these efforts and to maintain the significant military and financial assistance already being provided to Ukraine.

The statement also welcomed the intentions expressed by the U.S. President to work towards an end to hostilities and a just and lasting peace for Ukraine. Leaders underscored a shared understanding that any diplomatic solution must safeguard the vital security interests of both Ukraine and Europe.

Specifically, the statement highlighted the importance of providing Ukraine with robust and credible security guarantees, enabling it to effectively defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity. Reaffirming Ukraine’s right to self-determination, leaders stressed that meaningful negotiations can only occur within the context of a ceasefire or de-escalation of hostilities and that any resolution cannot be decided without the full participation of Ukraine itself.
