The head of the German Civil Service Federation (Deutscher Beamtenbund), Volker Geyer, has dismissed calls for restraint in public sector appointments, instead proposing a re-evaluation of past privatization policies.
In an interview with the “Rheinische Post” on Tuesday, Geyer questioned whether the complete privatization of infrastructure was a beneficial course of action. He specifically referenced networks including postal services, telecommunications and transportation, arguing that the state must guarantee comprehensive provision across all areas. He suggested that civil servant status could be justifiable in these sectors.
Geyer expressed concern over a perceived decline in public trust in the efficacy of state services. He cited a recent federation survey revealing that 70% of respondents reported a loss of confidence in the state’s operational capacity last year. Preliminary results from a follow-up survey, not yet publicly presented and scheduled for release in September, indicate the situation has not improved and may have even worsened. He indicated a growing public concern regarding the reliable functioning of crucial public services.
