Omid Nouripour, Vice President of the German Bundestag, has expressed reservations regarding the outcomes of the recent Ukraine summit in Washington. Speaking to RTL and ntv television, Nouripour stated that the meeting appeared to have yielded no substantive progress and cautioned against being misled by perceptions of a positive atmosphere, specifically referencing what he characterized as a dismissive interaction between the US Vice President and the Ukrainian President.
While acknowledging the importance of continued dialogue and the consensus that further work is necessary, Nouripour voiced skepticism regarding potential future trilateral talks between Presidents Putin and Zelenskyy, mediated by US President Trump. He suggested that Russia currently holds a position of advantage in any such negotiations.
Nouripour emphasized the potential for Russia to sabotage any meeting through strategic maneuvering, citing preconditions set by Putin regarding ceasefires and other issues as unacceptable and potentially leading to the end of Ukraine as an independent nation.
Furthermore, the German Vice President criticized the temporary exclusion of European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen from the Washington summit. He pointed out that von der Leyen represents over 400 million people and serves as the voice of key nations – including Poland, the Baltic states, Czech Republic and Romania – who possess significant stakes in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
Nouripour concluded by suggesting that the situation highlights a prioritization of accommodating President Trump’s preferences over the advancement of both national and European interests.
