Following the indictment of former Transport Minister Andreas Scheuer (CSU) on charges of potential perjury related to the inquiry committee investigating the failed vehicle toll system, the Green Party is calling for further clarification regarding the debacle. Swantje Michaelsen, the party’s transport policy spokesperson in the Bundestag, stated that many citizens feel a sense of injustice and desire transparency, according to an interview with the “Rheinische Post” published Thursday.
Michaelsen added that Scheuer’s failed toll system cost taxpayers approximately 250 million euros. She alleges that Scheuer violated budgetary and procurement laws and misled parliament. “The fact that the Berlin public prosecutor’s office is now filing charges of false testimony clearly demonstrates that his statements raise questions not only politically, but also legally and that there is a need for clarification” she stated.
