Dortmund President Lunow Steps Down, Paving Way for Watzke

Borussia Dortmund’s president, Reinhold Lunow, has announced he will step down from his position in November, the club confirmed Friday. This decision clears the path for Hans-Joachim Watzke to pursue the presidency, a role he had previously expressed interest in.

Lunow stated that he had initially intended to seek re-election to ensure the continued development of Borussia Dortmund aligned with the interests of its members. However, during discussions with Watzke, he received assurances that key concerns would be addressed should Watzke be elected. Feeling confident that his priorities would be incorporated, Lunow now feels able to confidently transition the responsibilities of the office.

Watzke, 66, had previously signaled his intention to contend for the presidency following his departure as the club’s chief executive. Lunow’s initial announcement of his intention to seek another term had raised the possibility of a contested election between the two figures. With Lunow now stepping aside, a direct competition has been avoided.
