A prominent figure within the German Green Party is advocating for a shift in policy focus, prioritizing rural areas for government support of electric mobility and proposing reforms to inheritance tax to benefit regions like Eastern Germany.
Former Green Party parliamentary group leader and Bundestag Vice-President, Katrin Göring-Eckardt, argues that the party should tailor its solutions to the lived realities of people across the country. She specifically noted the limitations of public transportation in rural settings compared to urban centers.
Göring-Eckardt proposes that the Green Party should explicitly include a commitment to prioritize electric mobility support in rural areas, encompassing everything from electric cars to smaller electric vehicles and even used electric options. This approach, she believes, would address the needs of rural communities, contribute to climate goals and improve overall mobility.
Beyond electric mobility, Göring-Eckardt also highlighted the disparity in inheritance distribution, pointing out that only a small percentage of inheritances are received in Eastern Germany. She is calling for a reform of inheritance tax to incorporate a basic inheritance, ensuring that people throughout the nation, particularly those in the East, benefit from this system. The aim is to provide a more equitable distribution of assets and opportunities.
