German Airports Demand Enhanced Drone Protection

German airports are calling for enhanced protection measures against unauthorized drone activity, highlighting the critical need for state-level intervention and investment. Ralph Beisel, CEO of the Association of German Airports (ADV), emphasized that air safety begins on the ground and necessitates safeguarding airport facilities from illegal drone operations.

While airports are actively contributing within the bounds of current legislation, Beisel stressed that the primary responsibility for drone detection and defense lies with the government. He urged an end to debates surrounding responsibility and a commitment to providing state-funded technical equipment for airports, including effective detection systems.

Federal Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt echoed the need for increased security, stating that the government is bolstering drone defense through closer cooperation between the federal government and individual states. This collaboration aims to consolidate expertise and develop new defensive capabilities. Dobrindt acknowledged a technological arms race between the evolving drone threat and the means to counter it, assuring that the government is investing in advanced defensive technologies to mitigate potential drone-related attacks.
