New Polling Data Reveals Shifting Political Landscape in Germany
Recent findings from the ZDF Politbarometer indicate a significant realignment in German political support. For the first time, the Alternative for Germany (AfD) has reached parity with the Christian Democratic Union/Christian Social Union (CDU/CSU) alliance, both registering at 26 percent. This represents a one-point gain for the AfD and a corresponding one-point decline for the CDU/CSU.
The Social Democratic Party (SPD) remains steady at 15 percent. Based on these figures, continued governance by a CDU/CSU and SPD coalition would face considerable challenges.
The Left party has recorded a slight increase, gaining one percentage point to reach 11 percent. The Green party, conversely, has lost one point, now standing at 10 percent. The parties of “Others” the Basic Social Democratic Program (BSW) and the Free Democratic Party (FDP) maintain their previous levels of support at 3 percent each and 6 percent respectively.
A concerning trend emerged from the same polling data, revealing a widespread apprehension regarding political violence. Three-quarters of respondents express a belief that incidents of violence against political figures will increase in the future. Notably, supporters of the BSW showed a deviation from this broader sentiment, with only 47 percent believing such an escalation is likely, a significantly lower proportion than any other group surveyed.
