Germany’s Debt Strategy Needs a Clear Exit Plan

As the Bundestag prepares for its budget week deliberations, Christian Haase, the CDU/CSU parliamentary group’s spokesperson for budgetary affairs, has cautioned against a continued reliance on debt-financed policies.

Speaking to Bild newspaper, Haase expressed concern that excessive borrowing – which he referred to as a “sweet poison” – could lead to a loss of financial direction. He emphasized the importance of intergenerational fairness, suggesting that a clear strategy for reducing debt should be developed proactively to avoid becoming entrenched in a cycle of indebtedness.

While acknowledging the necessity of utilizing debt to address pressing security, economic and infrastructure challenges in the current environment, Haase stressed that such measures should be considered temporary solutions. He highlighted potential risks associated with rising interest rates as a consequence of the government’s current fiscal policies.
